So it’s that time again! Time for another delicious FTF food truck review! Whenever a new food truck is spotted near our office, we have to try it out. We don’t get a lot of food truck traffic down near Wall Street, so we can’t pass up the opportunity when it presents itself. This past Tuesday, Maureen Lowe spotted Big D’s Grub Truck near Hanover Square on her walk to work, so she was sure to tell us all about it when she got to the office, and it was clear we had to check it out for lunch.
We decided to head over a little early to avoid a long line like the one we encountered on our last food truck trip. Once we were there, imagine our surprise when not only was Big D’s Grub truck parked there, but the Cupcake Crew truck was parked right along side of it. Lunch and dessert all in one trip, this is a delight to any food truck follower! We did the right thing however, and ordered our lunch first. On the menu for FTF were two Ginger Chicken grinders (that is a sub sandwich for those of you who didn’t grow up in New England), a spicy chicken grinder and spicy chicken tacos. We rounded out our order with fries and an order of dumplings. This might sound like a lot, but what can we say? We had to try it all for a conclusive review!
With our lunch in hand, we made our way over to the Cupcake Crew truck. After chatting with a crew member about their choices, we decided to order two My Cousin Vinnie cupcakes which is a vanilla cake with chocolate chip cannoli filling in the center, topped with cannoli icing and fried cannoli shell crumbles. As it turns out, this is the cupcake that made the judges on TLC’s Cupcake Wars crown them winners back in 2008!
Once we arrived back at the office, it was time to dig in, and everything was delicious! Not only does Big D’s Grub offer huge sandwiches at a very reasonable price of about $7 per sandwich, but they are a real crowd pleaser. Their fries were topped with old bay seasoning making them absolutely delectable. The only recommendation we have is that if you are unable to finish your sandwich, do not save them in the fridge. We made this mistake, and the combination of pickled toppings, ginger and spicy dressings – well let’s just say they weren’t the best thing to smell first thing in the morning when we opened our fridge. As for the cupcakes, after one bite we all knew why they had won the Cupcake War Challenge! They were perhaps the best cupcakes I have had in an extremely long time. The cake was perfect and the cannoli filling was scrumptious!
