Getting to work has proven to be a bit more difficult than usual these past 2 weeks. For all of you working in downtown Manhattan like myself, I’m sure you’ve encountered the group of protestors that has named their cause “Occupy Wall Street.”
To be completely honest, I’m not 100% sure why or how this protest got started, and every time I see something in the news I wonder if those participating even know why it started or why it’s still going on. From reading the signs that the protestors have been carrying and quotes from their web site, I’ve gathered that they feel today’s financial system is unfair and unjust, and that wealth should be redistributed. While I admire their perseverance and the fact that they have lasted 2 weeks sleeping outside in New York City, I can’t help but wonder what this will accomplish.
We all know the financial system is not perfect (flashback to 2008), but I find it hard to believe that redistribution of wealth is going to solve America’s economic woes. I’m not really sure what the protestors think that would accomplish either. The protest’s organizers hope that the protestors themselves will formulate their own specific demands, expecting them to be on “taking to task the people who perpetrated the economic meltdown.” From what I can see though, it’s a pretty unorganized attempt to get attention without really explaining what they are seeking attention on.
