We’re always warned on long flights to stand up and stretch our legs but no one ever thinks about sitting at work or in a conference all day in the same frame.
As a woman of the 21st century, I’ve been warned of the “Secretary’s Rear” of the 60s. In the words of Michelle Obama, it’s time to “Get up and move!”
We’re seeing a trend in events where the traditional sit-down lunch and formal break period are transitioning into high boys and standing room. Instead of the formalities of the past, events are embracing the networking of the future. Facebook isn’t the only place for social networking; a conference can get you as many “likes” and “friends” as the virtual world.
Globally, we’re seeing the UK following America’s lead on getting up and moving. A successful conference is measured by the number of business cards exchanged, the connections made and the future business on the horizon. Events are quickly turning into an event of networking rather than based around the meal.
We all know that exercise is a key factor for living a healthy life style but I never really thought about the dangers of sitting. Our office recently installed a treadmill desk employed to ease health hazards of sitting. The maximum speed is 4 miles per hour and has proven to be a hit amoungst employees.
Actions speak louder than words, so next time you find yourself complaining about your achy legs, do something about it. Get up and move!
