Here’s a quick review of electronic gadgets that could quickly eat up bonuses and tax returns.
As promised, I am offering another quick view into the wide, wide world of electronic gadgets that could quickly eat up your bonus and tax returns. For this blog posting, I have scanned consumer items featured at the CES 2022 conference in Las Vegas, which included Pepcom’s Digital Experience! event for journalists. It’s hard to find a theme among the flow of so many cutting-edge gadgets, so I narrowed my search to offerings that somehow involve homes, humans, and lifestyles.
Samsung Electronics Debuts a Smart Projector
In time for the CES event, Samsung Electronics officials launched what it says is a “portable screen” device that has been dubbed “The Freestyle,” which is a cutting-edge projector and entertainment device that could be used at home or in the office, which may be one and the same for awhile.
“Targeted toward Gen Z and millennials, The Freestyle is a projector, smart speaker, and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device,” according to the Samsung press release. “The Freestyle’s versatile cradle allows rotation of up to 180 degrees, enabling users to show high-quality video anywhere — tables, floors, walls or even ceiling — no separate screen required.”
The Freestyle can “automatically adjust its screen to any surface at any angle,” according to Samsung. The system is compatible with “external batteries that support USB-PD and 50W/20V output or above … The Freestyle is also a pioneer in that it’s the first portable screen that works when connected to a standard E262 light socket without the need for additional wiring, besides compatibility with the traditional wall plug option.”
The smart projector can also offer mood lighting via a translucent lens cap, act as a smart speaker that can help to match music to visual effects that are projected on walls, floors, or other surfaces.
The Freestyle also supports Smart TV features that come with Samsung Smart TVs, including “streaming services and mirroring and casting features compatible with both Android and iOS mobile devices,” according to Samsung.
GE Lighting Expands Smart Home Offerings
Also at CES 2022, GE Lighting, a Savant company, announced that it is expanding its smart home line, known as Cync, with a Smart Thermostat and Temperature Sensor, a line of Outdoor Security Cameras, and additional lighting products.
“All new Cync devices work together via the Cync app, powered by Savant to automate temperature inside the home, as well as security and lighting inside and out,” according to GE Lighting officials.
The new Cync Smart Thermostat “can be installed without a common wire … No hub is required for ‘away from home’ control using the Cync app. The all-new Cync Room Temperature Sensors work with the Smart Thermostat to monitor individual rooms or the entire home and optimize the comfort accordingly. The new Cync Smart Thermostat and Temperature Sensor will be available to order in January from Lowe’s, Best Buy, and Amazon,” according to the vendor
The Cync line now includes “outdoor camera options that keep families safe, the home secure, and provide peace of mind around the clock. The Cync Outdoor Smart Camera comes in both wired and battery/solar-powered options, so users can choose the setup that’s optimal for their smart home,” according to the vendor.
The outdoor camera has 2K/1280P HD video and night vision, a digital swivel head, and cloud and local SD storage options, according to GE Lighting. The outdoor cameras and accessories “will be available to order in February from Lowe’s, Best Buy, and Amazon.”
Lastly, the Cync line of smart bulbs has added 11 products, “including smart decorative filament-style bulbs in various shapes and sizes, such as candelabra and globe and the ever-popular reveal general-purpose bulbs. These additions will be offered in both white and full-color options. The lights come equipped with Wi-Fi unlocking a range of features including voice control, scheduling scenes, and more — all controlled from the Cync app … Users will have the ability to change the living room to a dance party from their cell phone or check to see if the kids left the lights on when they left for school. The new Cync smart lights will be available to order in March from Lowe’s, Best Buy, Target, and Amazon,” according to the vendor. “In addition to control via the Cync app, powered by Savant, Cync devices can be controlled with both Alexa and Google.”
