Pardon my shameless self-promotion but FTF News is very happy to announce that we will have a booth at the SIFMA Tech 2013, June 18-19, in New York. At booth # 1301, you will see printed editions of our latest magazine, also available in a digital format, that focus on the new rules for what we call operational data management.
To put it simply, ops data management is the effort by firms to gain control over the disparate, often proprietary and yet essential data that falls between the cracks or overlaps with reference and market data. The overriding goal is very ambitious—firms have to better manage their operational data resources to achieve higher levels of operational efficiency.
In particular, these are the data-related problem areas for operations such as developing standards for corporate actions data processing and attempts to standardize the definitions of corporate actions much like the very successful legal entity identifier (LEI) effort.
We will also chronicle the messy data gathering and management chores to come for over-the-counter (OTC) collateral and margining, which will be essential for cleared and executed OTC instruments.
We cannot ignore the data management and data integration challenges that come with automating reconciliation and exceptions management. In addition, firms are grappling with ways to streamline the messaging and instructions for custodian banks. Internally, firms are beginning to integrate middle and back-office data with the front office flows for OMS/PMS platforms.
So, as firms maneuver around the walls separating front, middle and back-office systems, they are also beginning to see ops data integration challenges for back-office accounting systems, hedge accounting, compliance reporting, performance measurement, risk management across the enterprise, settlement and trade confirmation.
We will be conducting an online survey of user firms this month to help us flesh out these growing data management issues. The survey story will be included in our coverage for the SIFMA digital and print editions.
In that edition we will also report on the winners of the FTF News Technology Innovation Awards for 2013 (voting just closed for the awards). We will also detail the new ops data demands for hedge funds that must register with and be examined by the SEC, the data demands to come for cleared and executed OTC derivatives, the FATCA data challenges to come, and some of the best pieces from our recent online coverage.
But we also have some fun and games planned for the SIFMA show and we are offering a visual teaser below. You will have to contact us soon or come to the booth to find out what we have up our sleeves. (Hint: the image might be the working draft for our interactive parody of the famous Operation board game.)
