In the latest of several recent personnel shake-ups at the CFTC, the regulator this week named Gretchen Lowe the new principal deputy director and chief counsel for the Enforcement Division, officials say.
Lowe was previously acting director of the division until former federal prosecutor Aitan Goelman was named to the spot last week by new CFTC Chairman Tim Massad, whose first day on the job was also last week.
Before her stint as acting director, Lowe was chief counsel of the Enforcement Division, and before that served as associate director. In those capacities, she led investigations and prosecutions of many high-profile cases, like the ongoing investigation into LIBOR rigging and manipulation of energy markets.
“I’m very happy to be working with Gretchen as my principal deputy,” says her new boss, Goelman, in a CFTC statement. “Her wealth of institutional knowledge and sound judgment will be invaluable to me as we move forward in furtherance of the mission of the division.”
