SEC Promotes Acting Chief
The SEC reports that Jane Norberg has been promoted to head its whistleblower office.
Norberg, who joined the SEC in 2012 as the first deputy chief of the office has served as acting chief since the departure of Sean McKessy, the whistleblower office’s inaugural chief.
Before joining the SEC, Norberg was in private law practice, including at Shearman & Sterling LLP, the SEC says, noting that she “previously served as a special agent for the U.S. Secret Service, where her duties included providing protection to the President, Vice President and visiting foreign dignitaries as well as conducting criminal investigations into federal crimes.”
The Office of the Whistleblower “intakes and reviews whistleblower tips received by the agency, evaluates whistleblower award claims, and makes recommendations on whether claimants have satisfied eligibility requirements to receive an award,” according to the commission’s statement.
In August 2016, SEC officials say that the awards to whistleblowers have surpassed the $100 million mark.
SEC Fills Associate Regional Director Enforcement Post in Atlanta
The SEC reports that Aaron W. Lipson has been named the associate regional director for enforcement in the Atlanta office.
Lipson began working in the division of enforcement in the Atlanta office in 2004 as a staff attorney, before becoming an assistant regional director in 2010, according to a commission statement. “In 2010, he also joined the Division’s Complex Financial Instruments Unit, which investigates potential misconduct related to asset-backed securities, derivatives, and other complex financial products.”
Lipson will now oversee the SEC’s enforcement activities covered by the Atlanta office, the SEC says, citing several of his successful past cases. He succeeds William P. Hicks, who is now senior trial counsel in the Atlanta office, per the SEC.
Blackline Appoints First Chief Customer Officer
Los Angeles-based Blackline, a provider of financial controls and accounting automation software solutions, has appointed Karen Flathers as the company’s first chief customer officer.
Flathers was formerly vice president, global field operations, at Zuora, a cloud enterprise software company.
At her new post, Flathers will “directly oversee the day-to-day functions” of BlackLine’s implementations, support, customer success and product training departments, according to a statement, which notes also that at Zuora she had “direct management responsibility for a team of nearly 100 people…. Prior to Zuora, Flathers served as senior vice president, Services and Support, at utility services company Aclara.”
CFA Institute Has a New Managing Director EMEA
CFA Institute, an association for investment professionals, reports the appointment of Gary Baker as managing director of CFA Institute Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), effective immediately.
Baker, an investment management veteran based in London, will be “responsible for the strategic direction of the EMEA region and will work to strengthen relationships with member societies, institutions, universities, regulators, and institutional partners.”
Baker has previously served as managing director, deputy head of research, Jefferies, and as managing director, chief European equity strategist, Merrill Lynch, the institute says in a statement.
