Standard Chartered has appointed a physicist and engineer from Daimler AG, Dr. Michael Gorriz, to be the group chief information officer, with his term to start in the third quarter of this year, official say. Gorriz, who will be based in Singapore, will report directly to Bill Winters, the incoming group CEO.
At Daimler, Gorriz has worked as a specialist in aerospace research and design and advanced to become a general manager for Daimler Mexico, officials say. Daimler employs 280,000 people across Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa.
“Over the past 14 years, he held various CIO roles with the group and since 2008 was responsible for strategy, planning and development of all IT systems, as well as the operation of all data centers and communication networks at Daimler AG,” according to a statement from Standard Chartered.
For the past four years, Gorriz has driven the digital transformation within Daimler, both for employees and customers, officials say.
“As a leader in digital transformation, he has the capabilities and experience to drive innovation and change in technology and operations, which are key to delivering our productivity goals and to enhancing our service to clients,” says Peter Sands, group CEO, in a prepared statement.
Gorriz will replace the retiring Jan Verplancke, director, group chief information officer, after 11 years of service, officials say. “Jan will leave on the completion of an appropriate hand-over period,” officials add.
Standard Chartered PLC is listed on the London and Hong Kong Stock Exchanges as well as the Bombay and National Stock Exchanges in India, officials say.
